R

Recovery printing

A function of SmartDeviceMonitor for Client that improves the workflow by checking the status of the selected printer prior to sending the job. If the printer is not available, it will automatically search for other available printers on the network, saving the customer having to search for one manually.

Registered destinations

The maximum number of destinations (e-mail addresses or folders) that can be stored in the machines address book.

Resolution

The maximum resolution, expressed in dots per inch (dpi), a scanner/MFP/printer can scan or print (copy). Current standard is 600×600 dpi.

RGB

Short for Red Green and Blue.

Rotate Sort

Method of sorting in which alternate sets are delivered rotated at a 90 degree angle (LEF and SEF) when producing multiple copies of multi-page documents. At least 2 paper trays are required.

RPCS

RPCS (Refined Printing Command Stream) is a printer description language (PDL) developed by Ricoh and known for its user friendliness (icon based).

S

Safety Protection System (SPS) package

Electronically controlled, transparent safety flap in the feed opening as additional safety element.

Saddle Stitch

A binding process in which sheets of paper are stapled through their middle.

Sample Copy

A copy function which prints only one (1) set with applied copy & finishing settings, allowing a visual check. Upon confirmation, the rest of the requested sets are printed.
This function requires a hard disk (HDD) to be installed on the MFP.

Sample Print

A print function which prints only one (1) set with applied print & finishing settings, allowing a visual check. Upon confirmation, the rest of the requested sets are printed.
This function requires a hard disk (HDD) to be installed on the MFP.

Scan to e-mail

A scan and distribution function which enables the user to distribute scanned data via e-mail to anywhere in the world. The scanned data is attached as a file to the email message.

Scan to Folder

A scan and distribution function which enables the user to distribute scanned data to predefined destinations within the network. SMB (Windows), NCP (Novell) or FTP (cross platform) can be used as distribution protocols.

Scan to FTP

A scan and distribution function which enables the user to distribute scanned data to predefined destinations within the network. FTP (cross platform) is used as distribution protocols.

Scan to USB

A scan function that enables the user to store scanned data on a USB storage device. A function available on some smaller (SOHO) MFP products.

SD Card

SD (Secure Digital) card is a memory card used in our GW architecture devices for firmware update or adding functionality. It replaces the traditional ROM DIMM card, and is cheaper and much smaller in size.

Shift sort

Method of sorting in which alternate sets are shifted when producing multiple copies of multi-page documents.

Simplex

Simplex refers to single-sided copying/printing (versus Duplex).

Single-pass duplex document feeder

A single-pass duplex document feeder uses two scanning elements to scan both sides of the page at once.

SmartDeviceMonitor

Software developed by Ricoh that helps the user to monitor and manage a network device from behind the computer.

Speed dial

The maximum amount of fax numbers (destinations) that can be programmed in a fax. Speed dials require more steps to select than Quick dials. In newer products with large LCD displays, there is no real difference between Quick dials and Speed dials as the number of steps are the same.

SSL

SSL (Secure Socket Layer) is protocol used to secure connections between 2 hosts.

Stamp (Fax)

Fax function to mark every original scanned with a stamp. This requires a document feeder (ADF/ARDF).

Stamp (MFP)

Function that adds a (background) stamp to the copies. Format, position, font, size, density, and language of the stamps might be changed.

Steel/thermal binding

SteelBinding is Unibind’s patented version of thermal binding. The Steelbinding concept distinguishes the Unibind transparent or hardbook cover from all other covers on the market. At the back, each Unibind cover is provided with a U-formed steel spine. This distinctive and fundamental part of the cover protects every document or photo book binding on three sides.
Furthermore, the U-formed steel spine functions as a heating conductor and reservoir with a Resin SteelBinding product. Each Resin SteelBinding machine starts up its heating compartment while in contact with steel. The hard resin inside the cover then melts as the U-formed steel ‘basin’ prevents it from being absorbed by the cover finishing. The pre-assembled paper edges sink into the heated resin for a perfect binding result!

T

Tandem copy

Function, also known as” Copy Connect”, that enables the user to share the big copy job (peak job) over 2 machines, doubling the productivity. Operation is done from (any) one of the two models while production is shared over 2 machines. Should one machine go off-line, the other will automatically complete the ‘connect job’.

Tandem tray

A tray that holds two stacks of A4 sheets. If the right stack runs out, the left stack moves to the right and the machine continuous printing. Paper can be refilled (left stack) while the machine is in operation.

TCO

The TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) is the complete cost of an asset, usually a hardware device. It includes initial acquisition, consumables, maintenance, required training, repairs, and other associated costs.

TIFF

TIFF (Tagged Image File Format) is a raster/bitmapped file format for PC and Macintosh (.tiff).

Toner Yield

The number of prints before the toner cartridge needs replacing. Calculation is generally based on A4-size paper with 5% coverage.

TWAIN

TWAIN is an interface standard for Windows and Macintosh that allows scanners and digital cameras to communicate with image processing software. As long as both are TWAIN-compliant they will work together.
The word TWAIN comes from the phrase “…and never the twain shall meet…”, reflecting the difficulty of connecting scanners and personal computers at the time TWAIN was developed. However, TWAIN is often humorously called an acronym for “Technology Without An Interesting Name”.

U

USB 2.0

USB 2.0 (Hi speed) is the higher speed version (480 Mbps) of the USB interface, backwards compatible with the ‘older’ USB 1.1 interface (12 Mbps)

USB 3.0

USB 3.0 (Super speed) is the latest version of the USB interface (4800 Mbps).

V

VM card

A VM (Virtual Machine) card is a memory card that contains a customised Java-based software solution, created with SDK. This solution has to be installed from the VM card on a device in order to run it.

W

Specification, expressed in seconds, that a device requires to become ready (start button green) after switching on.

Web Image Monitor (WIM)

Embedded web server on our MFP’s and printers.
It allows the user to monitor, manage and configure the device via an Internet browser (no need for additional software); simply type in the device’s IP address in the address field of the browser.
Some functions (configuration) can be password protected.

Web SmartDeviceMonitor (WSDM)

X

Xerography

The indirect electrostatic copying system which is the basis of all modern plain paper copiers, patented in 1939 by Chester Carlson.
Xerography comes from the Greek words for ‘dry writing’.
